Metal shaving in progressive die
In a progressive die, shaving is a secondary process to shear a previously cut edge to produce a smooth and straight edge with minimum breakaway. This metal stamping process usually applies on highly precision dies with precision clearances; the finished quality is comparable to or better than fine blanking.
In the shaving operation, the amount of material being removed from the pre-cut edge is kept to a minimum in order to produce a smooth and straight surface. The common problem most toolmakers face is the loss burr that is produced during this process. Due to its irregular shape and small volume, the loose burrs will not be contained within the die opening, thus, the lose burrs are being carried over to the other part of the press tool and may cause heavy die marks on the components being produced or create some obstruction to the feeding.
To solve this problem, some experienced toolmakers will usually do a 80% deep semi cut on the pre-cut profile, a spring loaded pressure pad placed right under it to ensure the slug is being push back to the cut profile.
During the shaving operation, the lose burr and slug will be compressed together, both the slug and lose burr will then be able to push out from the die opening.

I have this issue of slug from shaving moving to other part of tool and the part. I am planning to use this technique in my progressive tool.Thankyou

Hello
I am working with 0.0025″ sus 304 material stamping along with laminated adhesive.
I am getting loose burr issue very often and we cannot clean the part after stamping. Please advice to control in stamping process.
